ATM Placement for Your Business: What to Ask a Local Operator

Understand ATM placement, cash loading, service responsibilities, and agreement terms before choosing a local operator.

An ATM placement agreement should tell you who owns the machine, who supplies the cash, and who handles service. Start with those responsibilities before comparing revenue-share offers.

Placement programs differ. CORD describes both a turnkey arrangement and a merchant-loaded arrangement, with location qualification required. Those are examples of that company's programs, rather than terms every operator offers. CORD retail programs.

Explain your location before asking for an offer

Give prospective operators the business address, type, hours, available space, and any existing ATM arrangement. Share actual information about traffic and customer requests when you have it. An operator can then explain what else they need to evaluate the location.

Ask what qualifies a site for the proposed program. If an offer is described as free, request a written explanation of the costs and responsibilities that remain with the merchant. Discuss power, connectivity, access for service, and any obligations if the agreement ends.

Compare the full arrangement

Ask how revenue share is calculated, when it is paid, and what reporting accompanies it. Check whether the calculation uses approved surcharge transactions and how adjustments are addressed. Avoid comparing an estimated monthly payment with a contractual formula as though they were the same commitment.

Confirm who loads cash, who monitors the equipment, and who responds when the machine stops working. Ask for the support contact and the process outside normal business hours. Clarify whether the merchant has any routine duties and what training is provided.

Read the exit terms

Review the agreement's length, renewal, exclusivity, relocation, removal, and termination provisions. Identify who repairs any installation-related damage when the ATM is removed. If a term is unclear, have the operator explain it in writing before signing.

An ATM placement offer is easier to assess when the responsibilities and payment terms are explicit. Use ATM Atlas to find operators serving your business location, then request comparable proposals. The operator decides whether the site qualifies and sets the final agreement.
