ATM Processing Explained: How to Compare Providers

Compare ATM processing providers by compatibility, reporting, support, settlement arrangements, and contract terms.

When comparing ATM processing providers, ask what the service includes and what remains your responsibility. Processing support and physical equipment maintenance should be clear in the proposal.

CORD's processing-only program, for example, lists processing and phone technical support as provider responsibilities, while the customer provides equipment, cash management, maintenance, parts, and communication. Other providers may package their services differently. CORD processing-only program.

Confirm compatibility before discussing price

Give the prospective processor the manufacturer, model, current configuration information requested through an appropriate private channel, and location. Ask which changes would be needed to use the service and who performs them.

If you already have a processor, review the existing agreement before planning a switch. Ask both providers how the change would be coordinated, which authorizations are required, and how transaction records will be retained. Do not change settings based only on a general online guide.

Get reporting and payment terms in writing

Ask to see the reporting available to an equipment owner. Discuss transaction detail, reconciliation, alerts, and access permissions. Establish who receives notices and what action the processor expects after an alert.

Request the applicable charges, settlement arrangements, surcharge treatment, adjustments, and contractual commitments in writing. If someone advertises a particular payout or fee, ask whether it applies to your proposed agreement and what conditions accompany it.

Understand the support boundary

Ask who handles an authorization issue, communications fault, or hardware failure. Request the escalation process and support hours. A telephone support promise does not tell you whether parts or an on-site repair visit are included.

Before accepting the proposal, check its term, renewal, termination, and any equipment or communications obligations. Make sure the parties agree on what must be ready before the machine can operate under the new arrangement.
